Who Is At Risk of Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is one of those tricky and often painful reproductive conditions that are often very painful and bothersome, but that many people don't know a whole lot about. Not so long ago, it was thought that the only way for a woman to effectively treat her endometriosis was to have a hysterectomy, but now, studies have found other ways to effectively treat this problem without having to resort to surgery at all.
It is thought that endometriosis can affect any woman who is menstruating, but you should know that there are a few factors which make it much more likely that you will suffer from this condition. So, if you are a woman of childbearing age, then you maybe at risk of endometriosis simply because you're a woman - but that doesn't mean that you will get it.
Five Risk Factors
There are more women who don't have endometriosis, than women who do, so knowing if you are at risk can help you to identify symptoms should you begin to experience them.
1. If you have a family history of this condition, then you are at higher risk for endometriosis yourself. For instance, if your mother or sisters have it, then you may very well end up suffering from it too.
2. If your cycle is less than 28 days, you might also be at greater risk for endometriosis.
3. If you have heavier than normal bleeding, your risks of having this condition increases.
4. If you have never been pregnant or only have one child, you may have a higher chance of having this condition.
5. If your uterus, cervix or vagina are mis-shapen and they cause problems with your menstrual flow, then you may be at higher risk for developing endometriosis.
Remember that just because you have some of these risk factors doesn't mean that it is guaranteed that you will have endometriosis.
Endometriosis Treatments - What Can You Do?
Many women decide to struggle through the pain, when they suffer from endometriosis, but you don't have to. In addition to causing painful symptoms, you might find that you need to treat this condition so you don't become infertile, especially if you are wanting children, so you need to know what your treatment options are.
Many women and health care providers are discovering that they can keep their endometriosis symptoms in check through a combination of balancing their hormones, either through the use of birth control pills, hormone therapy or changes in diet and exercise. If you are trying to become pregnant, your health care professional may recommend that you use hormone therapy or birth control pills for a time to help slow the growth of endometrial tissue and reduce your chances of being infertile.
If you are working to prevent and ease pain, then your health care provider may recommend that you use hormones such as those found in birth control pills in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise program to ease your endometriosis symptoms.
