Whats better for relieving sore muscles: a cold shower or a hot bath?
I heard cold showers are good for sore muscles, but I think the cold constrict your blood vessels, which lessens circulation so your muscles can’t heal that fast. In my opinion, hot/warm baths are better. What do you think?
When you have a hot bath/shower, the blood moves upward away from the muscles and towards the skin, where it attempts to get rid of the heat (sweating etc).
When you have a cold bath/shower, the blood moves away from the skin and sinks down towards your muscles & organs to retain heat.
Hence, overall, for sore muscle RECOVERY, cold batchs are better as they divert blood supply ( = nutrient supply for muscles to repair) to the muscles.
However, the best overall therapy to relieve sore muscles is to rapidly switch between cold and hot shower/baths.
Why? This promotes excellent blood flow, as the blood has to repeatedly move up and down through the layers within your body. Hence the blood vessels become stronger and, over time, they will be more able to supply healthy blood to muscles for recovery even when NOT in a cold shower/bth.
So in summary, for muscle recovery, cold is better; hot/cold switching is best;
hot only is just relaxing (relaxing because all the blood vessels dilate, a similar (while not identical) effect as alcohol).
