Slow Release
Chemicals that fade dark spots on your face have been available for many years. The hard part is to do it safely, without the risk of dangerous side effects. Now a completely natural substance can fade dark spots safely, and actually make your skin healthier at the same time.
Hydroquinone has been the most common chemical used to lighten skin. It is a well-known skin irritant. It also often causes odd staining and allergic reactions. Hydroquinone has been banned in the United Kingdom because of two major concerns:
- Leukoderma, also called Vitiligo -- a little-known condition that became famous when Michael Jackson said it was the cause of his loss of skin pigment in patches in the years before his death.
- Ochronosis, a blue-black skin discoloration. In other words, the skin care cream you took for lightening skin could actually cause a severe discoloration.
Recently another chemical called arbutin has been widely promoted as safer than hydroquinone. This is not an entirely new skin-lightening agent, as some would have you believe. It is actually hydroquinone in a slow-release form. Arbutin seems to be less irritating than hydroquinone. But it is not clear whether the risks of leukoderma, ochronis and even possibly skin cancer, all linked to hydroquinone, are eliminated by the slow release.
Fading skin spots without the risks -- and improving your complexion
The safest way I know to fade dark spots -- or lighten your entire complexion -- is a natural product with an odd name: extrapone nutgrass. No irritation, safety issues or other side effects have been reported for extrapone nutgrass. In fact, this stuff, extracted from a plant common in India, was originally developed as an anti-irritant for the skin -- only then they discovered it lightened skin, too.
As it happens, nutgrass has a history of thousands of years of safe and effective use in ayurvedic medicine, the ancient Indian health care system that is still popular today, and the inspiration for many current therapies.
How it works: The color in skin comes from melanin, our body's natural pigment. In clinical trials, extrapone nutgrass reduced melanin by more than 40 percent. Look for a product with a 0.5% concentration of extrapone nutgrass, because that's what worked so well in trials.
What else helps improve the complexion
While you fade dark spots, and lighten your complexion if you wish, it's a good idea to give your skin the nourishment it needs. While shopping for your skin care products, consider some of these other ingredients, which complement extrapone nutgrass and are also proven in clinical trials:
Phytessence Wakame, extracted from kelp found in the Japanese Sea, is used to build up hyaluronic acid, one of the essential proteins in skin. Phytessence Wakame works by blocking the enzyme that destroys hyaluronic acid in the body.
Cynergy TK, a patented ingredient, stimulates the growth of collagen and elastin, two more essential building blocks of your complexion that get lost through skin aging.
Coenzyme Q10. The amount of CoQ10 in our cells is reduced as we get older, and when we're stressed. It's a good idea to take CoQ10 in a dietary supplement, ideally as ubiquinol, much more effective than the ubiquinone that has been standard for years. But CoQ10 also can nourish the skin effectively from the surface -- if, and only if, you take it in the right form.
An ingredient called Nano-Lipobelle H-EQ10 (how do they come up with these odd names?) has the great quality of being absorbed effetively through the skin. Most CoQ10 in skin creams is in too large a molecule to be absorbed through the skin. Nano-Lipobellee H-EQ10 is in a "nano-emulsion," tiny particles that penetrate the skin.
