Aromatherapy Wicca
The focus here is on presenting some general information about natural health and healing, nutrition, and holistic health alternatives through herbs, roots, and plants. Today, many people around the world are seeking natural health alternatives derived from fresh organic herbs, fruits, vegetables, roots, beans, sprouts, grains, and nutritional supplements in order to promote natural healing, prevent illness, solve everyday health problems, and make healthier nutritional and dietary food choices. Herbal healing and remedies, via the medicinal properties of certain plants, have been around since the dawn of time with contributions from ancient India (Ayurvedic), China (TCM), Native American Indians, Greece, Egypt and Africa (Yorubic Medicine, i.e., Orisha-based herbal medicine), Meso-American Indians, Japanese Herbal Medicine (Kanpo), and Rome as examples.
In addition, the essential oils and carrier oils of herbs are used in aromatherapy for their therapeutic, synergistic properties and characteristics. Herbs are used in the practice of Naturopathic, Homeopathic, and Complementary and Alternative Medicine for non-invasive natural healing treatments, cures, and remedies. Herbs have metaphysical correspondences, associations, and properties along with their many uses and benefits in religious and spiritual paths throughout history. The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is a very informative resource for anyone who is interested in learning about the benefits, quality and safety standards of herbs, herbal and dietary supplements, and botanicals.
Below are some definitions worth considering:
- Herbalism: Herbalism is the holistic practice of utilizing plants, herbs, roots, and shrubs for healing with reference to their medicinal properties in a synergistic manner (i.e., preparations) for maintaining health and to prevent, alleviate, and/or cure disease in relationship with the mind, body, and spirit.
- Herbology: Herbology, akin to Botany, is the study of plants and their physical attributes and properties utilized for healing, foods, flavorings, scents, dyes, and more with foundations, major influences, and modalities in and from African, Native American, Chinese, Ayurvedic, South and Central American, Western, Native Eskimo, and European cultures and spiritualism. Note that modern pharmacology derives many of today's medicines from plants.
- Herbologist: Herbologists research and study the particular effects of plants, shrubs, herbs, roots, etc. on the human, and in some cases animal, body. This includes the study of the sections of plants that are used, methods of gathering plants, methods and techniques of extraction and preparation of plants, shrubs, roots, and herbs.
Some Common Resins & Incense
- Frankincense - Frankincense is sometimes known by its older name olibanum; it hails from the Boswellia sacra plant found in Somalia. It's one of the most commonly used resins as an incense and it is burned for purification, spirituality, and is often associated with the Sun, its energies, and Solar Magick.
- Myrrh - Myrrh comes from the Commiphora myrrh tree in Africa. Myrrh is frequently blended with frankincense due to both having similar properties, especially their aroma; in addition, it is used for its healing and attraction properties.
- Copal - Copal is most often burned for purification including spiritual cleansing and the cleansing of physical items and objects. Copal comes from various species of the Bursera tree found in Mexico and South America.
- Dragon's Blood - Dragon's Blood can be burned for love, strength, and courage. Needless to say, it does not come from dragons but from the Dracaena draco tree. Dragon's Blood can be used to add potency to spellwork or ritual practices.
In a future article, herbology and botany and their relationship to herbalism will be elaborated upon.
