Want to become a Wiccan? Assuming the answer is yes, you'll no doubt have come across a lot of information already and are wondering what your next step should be. Here are a few points to consider and a look at what your options are. If you are still interested in becoming Wiccan by the end, you've already taken your first step!

Why Do I Want to Become a Wiccan?

OK first, a little soul searching. To become Wiccan you need to be prepared to undertake some personal responsibility. Compared to many other faiths Wiccan is relaxed and even accommodating in its values and there are very few rules to follow. However, this does not mean that you will not have commitments to fulfill as Wicca is a lifetime practice. It requires a desire to learn and embrace new concepts - to better yourself, your skills and asks that you give back to the world.

You must learn to adopt the Wiccan Rede, one of the main rules (and as mentioned above, few rules!). Your pledge is to always consider the well being of others, and yourself, in all of your practice - "An ye harm none, do as ye will". If you are certain that this is the case, you are then free to do as you please.

If I Become a Wiccan, Will I Be Able to Cast Spells?

Spell casting is not essential to Wicca, but it is a wonderful and life affirming activity that will teach you a lot about yourself. They are a wonderful way of encouraging positive changes - of bringing genuine love to you, of encouraging a gift of money when it's needed etc.

It will not give you 'special powers' but rather allow you to reveal and use the innate powers within. It will also teach you to respect the world around you and to channel these external powers and use them for your spell work.

Do I Need to Join A Group or Coven?

In order to become an experienced and responsible witch/wiccan it would be best to seek out a local group. They will be able to teach you the ways and get you started on your spiritual journey. Be that as it may, this is not always possible as you may live in an area that is remote or would generally disapprove of your choice of faith. This does not prevent you as much as you may think and many Wiccans practise as solitaries.

If you choose the solitary route, you can go for a self initiation ritual. You may want to search for one that you feel suits you but I think it's nice to write one for yourself. It would therefore be wise to give yourself some time before you do this; to familiarise yourself with the Wiccan values.

What's My Next Step?

Your first step to become Wicca should be to talk to as many people about their journey as possible. It is a very personal progression and so this will give you an idea of just how many options there are for you out there. There are plenty of online forums that you can join to do this and you will find them friendly and welcoming!

You may also want to try working on connecting with nature. You will start to open up and see the divine in the world around you. This will start to inspire you, encourage you to take the time out to appreciate nature and engage you in one of the main principles of Wicca - living your life with respect. If you feel that you could adopt this attitude and bond with the earth then you know you have what it takes.
