Diamond clarity is described as the identification of the presence of internal and external imperfections on a diamond. The internal flaws are commonly known as inclusions while the external flaws are blemishes. These imperfections affect the diamonds' value but may or may not have an effect on its physical appearance.

Blemishes have different forms, they are known as polish lines, grain boundaries, naturals, scratches, nicks, pits or chips. On the other hand, inclusions may be identified through clouds, feathers, included crystals or minerals, knots, cavities, cleavage, bearding or internal graining.

Clarity is one of the 4 Cs considered when choosing a diamond ring. The other three are cut, color and carat. Experts say that clarity may have the least impact among the four Cs of a diamond, though some inclusion may make or break the beauty of a stone. Diamond clarity is graded under a 10x magnifying loupe. Expert graders look for possible flaws and classify them according to Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grading system. The classification ranges from Flawless (FL) to Included (I).

The system includes six classifications with 11 grading levels. The highest and the most valued clarity is flawless (FL) where neither blemishes nor inclusions are found. The next level is Internally Flawless (IF) which possesses some blemishes but doesn't have any inclusion visible at a 10x magnification. This is followed by Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS) level which is divided to VVS1 and VVS2.

Diamonds under this category have an extremely small inclusion that is difficult for an expert grader to see under a 10x magnification. VVS1 is more valued than VVS2. The next category is called Slightly Included (SI). This is divided into two as well, SI1 and SI2. Inclusions found in this diamonds may range from easy to very easily seen by an expert grader under a 10x magnification.

Finally, Included category (I) is divided into three, I1, I2 and I3. Diamonds that posses this level of clarity has some inclusions that may be visible even to an untrained grader's eye. This may greatly affect the appearance of the stone and could be a threat to its structure.

Diamonds with flawless clarity are the rarest of them all. This is also very expensive and often known to be a museum quality or investment quality stone. Now that you know about the different categories of clarity, you don't need to be hard on yourself if your budget is not enough for a flawless diamond ring.

Usually, imperfections found in IF to SI are not visible to the naked eye. It is still advisable to buy SI diamond ring since it could still have a magnificent quality at an affordable price. Some inclusions can add to the beauty and uniqueness of a ring, others can also be easily disguised by professionals through the diamond's mount setting.
