Intelligent Nutrients

Feeding toddlers isn't always an easy task. They're just picky sometimes! But getting toddler food ideas doesn't have to be hard - and keeping your toddler happy doesn't need to be difficult, either. Here are some tips and ideas to keep your little one full, healthy, and happy.

First, remember that your toddler is growing at an amazing rate. Even though growth slows down after an infant's first year of life, toddlers are still growing every day. They're also learning and exploring - they experience massive brain growth right along with their physical growth.

It's important that you feed your toddler not only foods that will give him or her energy, but you also need to use toddler food ideas that give your toddler the nutrients he or she needs to grow a strong body and a sharp mind.

Carbohydrate heavy foods are the most often recommended and marketed foods for toddlers. That's no surprise, since most toddlers seem almost addicted to chips, crackers, cookies, crisps, and other carb-laden goodies. These foods give your child a sugar high but little nutrition. That's right - they don't give him or her many nutrients at all. Even whole grains break down to sugar in your child's body... plus they're hard to digest.

Proteins and fats are better energy foods for your toddler. Before you shudder at the thought of giving your child fat, stop for a minute and think. You're being told to feed your tot a low-fat diet. But your toddler's brain is made of fat... any many nutrients are "fat soluble" or require fat to be used. In the decades since "low-fat" became a mantra, ADHD, learning disabilities, autism, childhood bi-polar disorder, and other mental/learning issues have skyrocketed. Coincidence? You decide.

Here are some solid toddler food ideas:

The same healthy foods you're giving your own family

Meats from grass-fed animals. Did you know that cows living out on pasture and eating grass make healthier meat? That's right - and grass-fed meat has more Omega-3 fatty acids than fish.

Fish - of course, fish is still a good idea. You'd be surprised by how easily most toddlers will eat fish. If your tot is a little leery of baked fish you can use canned salmon or sardines mixed with cream cheese to make a fun dip that even the most hardened tot will usually eat.

Vegetables - veggies offer a healthy source of carbohydrates for kids. Carbs give your child energy and as long as they're given in moderation they won't cause obesity (excessive carbohydrates make kids and adults fat). Vegetables also contain vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that are good for your little one. Many toddlers have trouble eating and digesting leafy greens, so you may want to hold off on raw leafy greens for awhile. They can usually eat cooked ones.

Fruits - in moderation fruits are a good thing. Try to keep fruit to a treat in season. Your child will learn to love them when he or she gets them but won't become addicted to their sugary sweetness. Another good energy source for on-the-go toddlers. Serve fruits cooked gently in butter or in a bowl with heavy cream to help curb the blood sugar high they'll give your tot.

All in all, feeding a toddler doesn't have to be hard - try to avoid the typical toddler "junk food." Even though the baby food marketing departments try to make "graduate" foods look healthy, they're really just filled with empty carbohydrate calories made to keep your kid hooked - and the profits rolling in. Give your child real meals and real food - you'll watch him or her grow and thrive as a happy, healthy, and intelligent child.
