Have you got your eyes set on that one cluster of clear quartz crystal that will make you the envy of all your rock hound friends? On the one hand, it ought to be an easy task. Clear quartz isn't exactly hard to find.

On the other hand, that's actually the problem. Given the prevalence of clear quartz, finding the perfect specimen can be downright difficult if not impossible.

The key is patience. Well, patience and some willingness to get out in the field and work. And a basic understanding of how to go about searching for crystals.

And maybe just a tad of luck.

To those obsessed with them, crystals are tiny miracles. They are as natural as rivers and leaves, occurring in the earth when a certain set of geological factors - the presence of certain minerals alongside one another, pressure from the earth itself, and temperature - are all present at the same time and place.

Your search for a special crystal to add to your collection should really start with a map. Not a plain old map, either, but one that highlights an area's geological character. Study it carefully and you'll begin to get a sense of where you might find a particular mineral and in what densities.

If they're available, you might also want to take a look at a mining map. These maps will show you the location (and frequently the size and quality) of a certain vein of crystal. Surface specimens are likely to occur along these veins. When you take a mining map and use it in conjunction with a geological map, you significantly increase the odds of a lucky day.

Be sure that you are careful to obey all laws of property. In other words, don't trespass! Plenty of mining companies - and private landowners, too - are altogether willing to grant you access to their land in order to search for rocks. But you have to reach out and ask permission first. And you also have to accept their answer - failure to do so can create problems for you, but it also gives rock hounds a bad name. Don't do that!

Once you're out on the prowl, look for loose soil and when you find it, gently begin to sift through it. If you're on mining territory, see if you can't spot some tailings - that is, waste from the mine's normal output. If you see that, spend some time going through it.

You are looking for the glint of crystal - that bit of stone that catches the sun and flashes brilliantly. But don't forget that these stones may have been hidden from the sun for years - decades or even centuries! They aren't going to be looking their best. These are rough specimens that you can take home and polish.

Bring along with you a three prong garden scratcher and a tiny hoe. These can make the digging process a lot simpler. Once you've found a stone, carefully begin to break up the soil around it. Plenty of crystals scratch or even flake easily - don't ruin the perfect stone in your eagerness to get a hold of it!

And don't forget the most important quality of rock hounds - patience. Just as the crystal is formed over time, so you must accept that finding the right one can take time as well. Enjoy the process and try not to get hung up on the perfect result.
