Coral Bells Propagation
Heuchera, Tiarella and Heucherella are easy to propagate. The plants are generally self-sterile and so gardeners who want seed will need to plant more than one species or cultivar. The flowers appear in the summer and the seeds will be ready 6 weeks after pollination. The seed pods will turn brown and split open at that time. The seed can be collected and sown immediately. Germination will occur in 30 days and the seedlings will be ready to pot up by fall. Some of the western species require a 3 month cold stratification. The seeds may also be dried and stored for up to a year.
In addition, the clumps may be divided. Heuchera, Tiarella and Heucherella naturally produce offsets on stolons. After their second season, the offsets form their own roots. Gardeners can dig up a 3 year old clump wash away the soil and pull off the rooted offsets. The smaller offsets may need to be potted and placed in a cold frame during their first winter. Gardeners can also collect the offsets before they have rooted and treat them like a stem cutting. They will root easily without any rooting hormone as long as they are protected from dessication by a mist bench or a plastic dome. With a little more care, gardeners may also have success by removing a leaf at the base along with a small piece of stem tissue and rooting the leaf/stem cutting. Heuchera, Tiarella and Heucherella are not long-lived plants. Gardeners can keep their collection alive by dividing their plants every 3 years and replacing the older plants with new divisions.
The great majority of commercially produced Heuchera, Tiarella and Heucherella start life in tissue culture. Growers start with buds, leaf petiole bases, or even pieces of the flower stalk and can create plantlets in only a few weeks. The cuttings are sterilized in 10% bleach or 70% alcohol and placed into sterile culture (agar plus sugar plus hormones in a jar). Once the cultures have reach stage 2, they can get a 10x increase in plantlets every 4 weeks. In tissue culture, sports are common. Many of the yellow or chartreuse cultivars arose during tissue culture. Breeders also induce polyploidy in Heuchera, Tiarella and Heucherella during tissue culture using colchicine or other similar chemicals. Tetraploid Heuchera, Tiarella and Heucherella have been created this way and have larger flowers.
Pests and Diseases
The astringent Heuchera and Tiarella leaves are generally left alone by deer and rabbits. This makes them a great substitute for Hosta. Just remember though, in the middle of the winter a ravenous deer or rapacious rabbit will eat anything, including a Heuchera.
Heuchera, Tiarella and Heucherella are generally not affected by insect pests in the garden. However, Heuchera may occasionally be pestered by black vine weevils which bore into the crown and kill the tops. Untreated, they will eventually kill the plant. Black vine weevils are controlled by systemic insecticides. Occasionally, gardeners will see mealy bugs or slugs but they are easy to treat with commercial products. Rarely, foliar nematodes will cause ugly discolored patches on the leaf. There is no control for nematodes...avoidance is the key. Only buy plants from nurseries that scout for and remove infected plants.
In hot humid gardens, some cultivars will experience summer dieback due to the fungus Sclerotinia. Gardeners should select cultivars that are known to be tough for their area. Good air circulation helps so keep other plants from overgrowing your Coral Bells.
