People are, by nature, experiential. This means we learn best from the simplest to the most complex of experiences. We make use of our five senses to create experiences which are then stored as memories in the brain, which acts like a blank, rewritable CD. When confronted with a similar experience which makes use of any of the five senses, we tend to remember the past. Photographic memory works the same way. Some people are able to ace an exam by memorizing the play of words and numbers in their review manuals. This is called the visualization technique. It involves observing how something looks like, and remembering it by associating it with the experience.

The best thing about photographic memory is that it isn't innate. It is a skill which can be learned and developed over time. Here are some simple things you can do everyday to improve your visualization technique, and your photographic memory.

1. When meeting people for the first time, repeat their names as often as it is possible. For instance, instead of saying, "Hello, it's nice to meet you", say "Hi Mary, it's nice to meet you." Then during the conversation, address the person using his or her name. "So Mary, you're a teacher...", or "Would you like some more wine, Mary?" Doing this will help you associate people's names with their faces better.

2. When looking at objects, pay attention to details. You tend to do this unconsciously when you are bored anyway, so make a habit out of it if you have the time. Aside from labels and words, observe colors, shapes and sizes. Create an image in your head without looking at the object, then check if you've registered the image correctly by taking a peek.

3. Finally, relax! Developing the skill of visualization requires concentration. It is always easier to observe and remember things when one is relaxed and is in no hurry. Give yourself time to convert a sight into a memory. To do this, you will need to go over the sight calmly more than once. This explains why cramming is ineffective. Forcing your self to memorize huge pieces of information in a very limited amount of time can be frustrating. If you had enough time to visualize words and sentences and convert them into memories, you would not only ace exams, you would be able to learn languages twice as fast too!
