As a rookie marketer, you can pick a great niche, buy the perfect domain name, build a neat website loaded with good content-and still not make any money.

Why is this?

It's because you're not going to make money unless you have traffic - that is, visitors - and to get visitors you need to rank highly with Google.-

The three letters are SEO

SEO means Search Engine Optimization. This is a fancy way of saying there are things you need to do in order to get Google's attention so that you will get on its first page-that little slice of nirvana sought by all smart Internet marketers.

Four ways to optimize your SEO

There are probably more ways to optimize your site for Google that you can shake a stick at. However, most smart Internet marketers concentrate on these three ways:

The Meta title

First, your key search word should always be in the title or Meta title of your domain. For example, if you are targeting the keyword anxiety attack help, the best possible domain name you can get would be anxietyattackhelp.com.

Unfortunately, the chances for getting this domain name with dot com, dot net or dot org are somewhere between slim and none. However, you can often get domain names that fit your keyword by using what is called a stop word. Stop words include a, the, and my. So, for anxiety attack help, you might be able to get eanxietyattackhelp.com or theanxietyattackhelp.com. Secondly, it's often possible to get the domain name you want by attaching something onto the end of your keyword. Examples of this would include anxietyattackhelpsite.com, anxietyattackhelponline.com and anxietyattackhelp360.com

The Meta description

Second, you must make sure the keyword you are competing for is in your site's description. This is called its meta-description. In fact, it is helpful to try to get your keyword in your meta-description at least twice. An example of this would be the Meta description "anxietyattackhelp.com offers important information about anxiety attack help, including do-it-yourself techniques you can use to deal with your anxiety."

Also, try to get your keyword in the first sentence of the copy on your home page.

Ping is the thing

In addition to optimizing your site via your meta-title and meta-description, you should add "ping" other sites every time you update your site. For example, whenever you update your site, you can go to Pingomatic.com, add your blog name and the URL of your blog's home page, and the system will ping 21 different services for you. Alternately, if you built your site using WordPress, you can add a plug-in such as Net Ping Optimizer that will do this for you automatically.

Get backlinks

Finally, it's important that your site have a number of backlinks. These are links from other sites to your site. The reason why these are valuable is because the more backlinks that Google sees to your site, the higher it will rank the site. You can get backlinks by adding comments to forums with a link to your site in your signature or by using a W.P plug-in such as Slick Social Poster.

Putting effort into SEO takes time and patience but it can pay off in higher Google rankings, which translates into more cash in your pocket.
