Motion Sickness
Out of all the things that can put a damper on a vacation-bad weather, lost baggage, overcrowded tourist spots-sickness is one of the worst. Other problems can be overcome, at least partially, with a positive attitude and persistence. But if you have a bad illness, there goes your vacation. All the time, money, and preparation that went into your trip was for nothing, and now the best you can do is try to heal yourself before the flight home. Hopefully, you have a nice hotel room with a view, room service, and a functioning television, at least.
Sources of Vacation Viruses
This should come as no surprise: The two biggest culprits behind vacation sickness are airplanes and hotel rooms, so you should try to take extra precautions with both.
All of the air in a plane is re-circulated throughout the flight, which means that, if there are sick people on board, the germs gradually permeate the cabin more and more as the flight goes on. This is why longer flights are more risky: There's more time for the germs to spread. And once the virus gets airborne, it begins to land on everything-the seats, the tray tables, and, yes, the passengers.
To avoid infection on an airplane, stay hydrated, which means drinking lots of water and avoiding alcohol and caffeine. Both of these substances have a dehydrating effect, and alcohol weakens the immune system. Wash your hands frequently, use hand sanitizer, and keep your hands away from your mouth, nose, and eyes.
In hotel rooms, viruses can linger for up to 18 hours after a sick guest checks out, and items such as telephones, remote controls, faucet handles, light switches, and doorknobs are often contaminated. Ideally, a room should be thoroughly cleaned before you check in, but the truth is that this doesn't always happen as well as we'd like. However, you can prevent any problems by following the usual steps: Wash your hands and keep them away from your face. Another good thing to do, if possible, is to leave your hotel room for a few hours immediately after checking in and dropping off your bags. Hopefully, any lingering virus will be gone by the time you return.
Other Illnesses
Sunburn: We may not think of sunburn as an illness, exactly, but if you've ever been badly burned on vacation, you know how debilitating it can be. Prevention is key: slather on the waterproof sun block (at least 30 SPF) and do so regularly until you're back inside. And if you do get burned, stay hydrated, apply aloe, and take an over-the-counter painkiller.
Motion sickness: Most first-time cruise passengers experience motion sickness at least for an hour or two, while some experience such debilitating motion sickness that it can ruin their whole trip. Most cruise ships have on-board doctors who can prescribe medications, and it may also help to use Motion Sickness Disks or antihistamines. Also, some motion sickness sufferers swear by ginger and green tea.
E. coli: Traveler's Diarrhea is surprisingly common, and anyone who has had it will tell you that it's no fun. Most often resulting from the E. coli bacterium, it can be prevented by eating only thoroughly cooked food, drinking bottled water, and avoiding ice cubes.
