Oil Mystic

Gout, or hyperuricemia, (elevated uric acid levels), is actually a form of arthritis, a condition which is caused by an excess of Uric acid in the blood stream, tissues, and urine. Certain foods, such as meat and some fish, which contain high levels of purine, should be avoided when gout occurs.

In people with gout, the body does not produce enough of the digestive enzyme uricase, which is an enzyme that changes the, normally insoluble, uric acid into a much more soluble form that the body's metabolism can deal with, and get rid of.

Lack of uricase can cause uric acid to accumulate in the in the blood and tissues, and to crystallize. When uric acid crystallizes, the tiny crystals take on the shape of needles and, like needles, they jab their way into our joints, with extremely painful results: typically in the joints of the big toes.

However, other joints can be vulnerable as well, including the mid foot, ankles, knees, wrist, and even the fingers. So, ask in your local health food store, or local medical herbalist, if they carry stocks of uricase for sale. Uric acid is a by product of certain foods, so gout is closely associated with diet; therefore, an improper diet, can substantially increase our likelihood of developing gout.

Okay, that is the long boring bit that helps us understand how gout occurs; which, unfortunately, is necessary to understand how to avoid the pain of it! Now for some suggestions on how to relieve the pain of a gout attack; and, hopefully, guide you to different eating patterns that should prevent further future attacks.

HERBS:

The herb Alfalfa is a good source of minerals, and other nutrients that can help reduce the level of serum uric acid in our blood stream, so, you might consider consulting a medical herbalist. Alfalfa can also be taken in capsule or tablet forms, which are available in many health food stores. However, for a quicker relief of pain, I suggest that you might like to try a kind of poultice, a paste of Cayenne and wintergreen oil, as I suggest below.

Cayenne (Capsicum) powder.

The powder should be mixed with wintergreen oil, to make a paste, and then applied, and bound, to the affected area, to more quickly relieve the inflammation and pain. This might cause a stinging sensation at first; but, with repeated use, the pain should diminish markedly! (Cayenne can also be taken in capsule form.) Some other beneficial herbs might include birch, burdock, hyssop and Juniper, and a local medical herbalist should be consulted to prescribe, and source, these.

Further Suggestions.

When an attack of gout strikes, perhaps you might like to consider eating only raw fruits and vegetables, for a week or so. Fresh juices are also considered to be very effective, and cherry juice is reputed to be the very best of all. Also, we should eat celery, in either fresh, or juiced, form. Cherries and strawberries help neutralize uric acid, so eat lots of them. Also include grains seeds and nuts in your diet, for example, so try eating a bowl of muesli for breakfast each day.

We should also drink plenty of water, (six to eight glasses a day), as our fluid intake helps promote the excretion of uric acid from your body; and, this can be a hard one for us, but we have to avoid eating meats, or offal, of any kind, as all meat, and also some fish, contain high amounts of uric acid!

Stay off the booze, as alcohol increases our body's own production of uric acid. Oh no, I can almost hear you say, not another hard choice! However, if the choice is between experiencing the excruciating pain that accompanies gout, or simply making some lifestyle changes, then I think the choice is quite clear.

Another suggestion, and this probably might sound an odd one, is to try treatment with honey bee venom. This has provided relief for some gout sufferers, as many older bee keepers will testify. Apparently, arthritic conditions are quite rare among bee keepers, honey Bee venom can be administered either by injection, with a hypodermic needle, or from the actual bee stings themselves. (Talk to a local beekeeper.)

Also, a deficiency in certain nutrients, such as Pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5), can contribute to production of excessive amounts of uric acid. So, maybe you should consider supplementing your diet with Vitamin B5 tablets, or capsules: 500mg capsules, daily, can help to repair tissue, and produces antibodies, and red blood cells as well. It can improve the resistance of stress, and assists in the body's absorbtion, and utilization of vitamins.

So, in conclusion, for the short term you might like to try the cayenne/wintergreen oil paste applied to the affected area, for a more immediate relief of the pain: and incorporate the other suggestions over the longer term.
