Understanding Biker Patches and their Meanings

We all have our own ways of interpr eting things… especially things with symbols, designs and unknown characters. For bikers, it is possible that a single patch may have different meanings.

The 1% Patch is usually worn by those who are members of outlaw motorcycle clubs . This is a reference to a statement made by the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) that 99 percent of American motorcyclists are law-abiding. This patch is usually diamond-shaped and it is believed that those who are wearing them are involved in criminal acts. The 99% patch on the other hand is worn by members of the law enforcement or motorcycle clubs.

The "13" Patch is common among the outlaw patches. This patch has a lot of meaning for bikers one of it is as the thirteenth letter in the alphabet is letter "M" which means marijuana as related to drugs and narcotics. In respect to biker clubs the letter "M" may also stand for "motorcycle" and may denote other meaning as well depending on other club's beliefs.

Memorial Patches are worn to memorialize the death of a fallen brother. The words "In Memory of… (followed by the name of the person who died)" is embroidered as their way of remembering and honoring their fellow biker's death.

The three-piece biker patches are composed of a top rocker a center design and a bottom rocker. What's written on the top rocker is usually the club name while on the bottom rocker is their club location, the center image is their club patch. This set also comes with an MC cube which means "motorcycle" to clarify that they are a motorcycle club and rather than another type of organization. It is believed that three-piece patch sets belong to outlaw motorcycle clubs but not necessarily a 1%. This set is now widely used by different clubs outlaw or not.

Two-piece patch on the other hand are used by riding clubs or signifies a motorcycle club in transition waiting from their dominant club to become a three-piece patch.

Title patches are small rectangular patches located on the front of the vest like, titles like: "president", "secretary", vice-president" etc.

There are a lot more biker patches but no matter how many there are they all have one aim… to be respected on the organization they are in and be recognized by the patches sewn on their back.
