Should Large Plant Pots be Round or should they be Like Boxes?
A question that is often asked is what kind of shape for large plant pots is ideal. Large plant pots are available in a large variety of shapes. Some are round, some are cylindrical, and some of them have a box-like appearance whilst others can have polygonal features. But, contrary to what most people think, it is not recommended that one should go for a random selection of the shapes of these pots.
It is not just about how cool the pots look
It goes without saying that most of the fancy large plant pots that widely experiment with shapes most often concentrate on the physical appearance of the pots than their functions. As a result, the utility of these pots, owing to their complex shapes, is often compromised. For instance, a large plant pot with the shape of a cone with its tapering side or apex on top will affect the sideways growth of the roots. Thus, consumers should be careful when choosing their large plant pots.
They should remember that the roots of large plants should have enough space for moving downwards as well as spreading sideways. Otherwise, it is not just the growth that will be affected, but also the plant will get less support at its base. Therefore, it is best to go for large plant pots with a good length, width and depth. One can opt for the spherical shape, or with a tapering cylindrical shape. The oblong or cubical shape, too, is not bad.
The type of the tree should also be considered whilst choosing large plant pots. For instance, if you want to plant smaller bamboos indoor, then you can opt for narrower cylinders as pots, as the roots will not grow too far sideways.
Is it the depth or is it the width of the pots?
It is a common misconception that if the large plants are put in a deep container, the downward growth of their roots will be enough to hold them in place and the roots will be able to suck nutrients in sufficient amount. This is why, in growth chambers where space is limited, saplings or young plants are kept in PVC pipes, so that the roots of the plants can have space for downward vertical growth and at the same time the maximum number of plants can be stored in the chamber.
Actually, it depends on the trees if a less wide and more deep, or the reverse, kind of pot will be useful. For trees that spread sideways and grow tall at the same time, the large plant pots should be both wide and deep. The trees that do not have a great height but have a significant horisontal growth can do well with less deep but wider pots. Trees with hardly any sideways growth of branches, but with a good upward growth will require deep pots. However, it is the safest to go for large plant pots that are both deep and wide, so that they are able to sustain any kind of large plant.
