Resveratrol is the Activator of Sirtuin the Longevity Gene

Sirtuin and How Resveratrol Turns on this Gene

Resveratrol a well-known substance found in grapes turns on the sirtuin genes, it is also found in Japanese knotweed, peanuts and red wine. Several studies showed that resveratrol can also activate the (SIRT1) gene and extend lifespan in various species, from yeast to worms to rodents.

What are These Longevity Proteins

Sirtuins are proteins found in a wide variety of living organisms, from yeasts to people.These proteins appear to play a major role in the aging process, which has made them of particular interest to scientific researchers who are interested in the possibility of extending our life span.

Resveratrol and Mice

An interesting resveratrol study (published the prestigious journal Nature in 2006) was conducted by a team of Harvard scientists (David Sinclair) and others, who tested the effects of resveratrol on obese mice.

David Sinclair's Mouse Experiments

The researchers put two group of mice on a high calorie, high fat diet. One of the control groups also received resveratrol. The diet started when the mice were a year old (a middle age in mouse terms).

The Mice on Resveratrol Did Better

As expected, overfed mice in the first group soon became overweight, developed diabetes, fatty liver, cancer and other health problems. The mice in the other group, who received the same unhealthy diet plus resveratrol, did much better.

And they lived longer too. Essentially, resveratrol neutralized the negative impact of excess caloric intake on health and longevity. But in no way are we recommending that it is good to over eat and take a resveratrol supplement.

While also overweight, the mice on resveratrol did not develop any of the health problems seen in the first group

What Were the Results of the Test

Is Drinking Red Wine the Key to Longevity

Resveratrol may not occur in sufficiently high concentrations in red wine to offer practical health benefits to humans. Drinking red wine to delay the aging process, is not practical you would need to drink 100 glasses a day to get any of the anti-aging benefits.

Red Wine Health Benefit

There are other compounds in red wine (and red or purple grape skins) which may play a larger role than resveratrol in the reported health benefits of red wine.

What the Scientist Suspected

Scientist suspect that some of the health benefits observed in experiments with mice fed diets having high concentrations of resveratrol may be a result of its activation of a gene that produces the enzyme called SIRT1, which is a sirtuin protein.

What Did David Sinclair Say About Resveratrol

"It's looking like these sirtuins serve as guardians of the cell," said Harvard Medical School researcher David Sinclair, who led the new work published in yesterday's online edition of the journal Nature. "These enzymes allow cells to survive damage and delay cell death."
