Anyone interested in magic has heard the "rules" that love magic is wrong because it interferes with someone's free will. The whole concept of love spells can be seen as questionable if you take that approach. The reality is that the ethical viewpoint of love magic isn't quite so black and white, and not all Pagans or witches have the same opinion on the matter. So don't just blindly accept that notion without some thought.

The real problem is the "typical" love spell that you might cast on someone to make them love you. Very few people would argue that this is the unethical part. And it's not even worth trying because the love isn't real and the relationship will certainly fail, usually after a very short time. The person you want will not naturally fall in love with you once the spell is finished, nor will you be able to change their feelings any more than you could before the spell.

But that doesn't mean all love magic should be shunned. This is where you get into a grey area, and personal ethics can vary. The most acceptable way of casting a love spell is to keep it general, and not targeted towards any specific person. As long as you can keep certain people out of your mind during the spell, this is a perfectly acceptable way of doing love magic.

A general spell might be looked at like a magnet, just drawing love into your life. Spells with rose quartz, patchouli, lavender, red roses, or orris root would all work just fine in this manner. Let the universe bring someone to you, rather than you choosing someone.

But just because you haven't specified anyone, doesn't mean that they are not effected by your magic. Would this still not interfere with their free will? That's a question you will have to answer for yourself. So even a general non-specific spell may not be perfect, depending on how you look at it.

What if you are already in a relationship, and you want to help mend problems or improve things with your partner? Another questionable area, but most people consider it an acceptable place for magic if you at least tell your partner that you are doing it.

In my opinion, the very best form of love magic that doesn't alter anyone's free will is the kind of magic you do on yourself. Work on your own qualities to make yourself more attractive. I don't mean silly glamour spells to change your hair colour, either. Develop more confidence and become more outgoing, and you will likely find it easier to meet someone special. This is really the only kind of love magic that bypasses the ethics issue since you are only doing it on yourself.

And remember that magic does have limitations, especially if you are new at it. If you sit at home every day, spells aren't going to conjure someone to come knock on your door. Once the spell is in motion, you need to do your part by getting out and being social.
