Stone Mortar Pestle

There are a lot of tools I don't have, nor particularly want. A still could be a handy thing to have, but there are two very good reasons I don't have or want one. One is that they can be dangerous if used improperly and the other is the number of laws and inspections, etc. that come with ownership. I do have several tools that are indispensable.

1) Mortar and Pestle: If you've never seen a set, it is a bowl and miniature club, usually made of stone but sometimes ceramic, wood or metal. It's primary function is grinding and mashing herbs and spices. Most of the products processed in this are small seeds and bulbs, such as garlic.

2) Coffee/spice grinder: This is for larger quantities, stuff that's to big for the mortar or extremely hard substances not suitable for grinding by hand.

3) Gel Capsules: These are fairly easy to come by, and can be used with the ground herbs from either the mortar or the grinder.

4) Petroleum Jelly: This isn't for herbal preparations that are meant to be ingested, as it is toxic if swallowed. However, when an oil extraction is to thin for an application, it can be mixed with petroleum jelly to make it thick enough. If a customer is allergic to aloe, I have to use some care to make sure it isn't an ingredient already in the remedy.

5) Good Quality Olive Oil: Because I don't have a still, I use other substances to make my extracts. One of them is with olive oil, as it is also healing. Most oil extractions are not ingested, although a few can be.

6) Triple Distilled Vodka: Like olive oil, vodka is good for making extractions. The reason I use this rather than other "hard" alcohol products is that vodka is undenatured, and the only potable one. If you want to know a money saving tip, you can use vodka to make your own vanilla extract.

7) Vinegar: There are several types of vinegar that can be used to make an extract. I use both white distilled vinegar and apple cider vinegar depending on what I wish to do with it. It is also important to remove oils from chili peppers off my skin...water won't work there.

Amber and green glass: Most herbal preparations don't do well in light, and glass is the preferred storage container for most liquid preparations. Even if it is in dark glass, it is still wise to store preparations in a cool, dry, dark place.
