Whether you have chosen an intensive or extensive green roof depends on whether you choose in perform intensive maintenance on the intensive roof or more moderate maintenance on the extensive roof.

Which ever roof you have chosen it will still require some attention or it could simply die a slow death. The amount of maintenance you have to perform also depends on how diligent you were when the roof was designed. Was the local weather a consideration when choosing plants? Will the growth medium support the specific vegetation you had installed or planted? Some growth medium has a time release fertilizer incorporated within it which should release fertilizer for a period of time. At some point that will be used up and you will have to fertilize yourself. Was the vegetation planned in accordance with the roof having sun exposure for many hours or enduring a lot of wind or perhaps within a heavy snow zone? These all factor into the amount of maintenance the roof requires to stay healthy and green.

It may take up to three months for the plants to really get established. During this time they will require some form of watering. Either from an irrigation system that was installed when the roof was constructed or from hose work by you, the owner. An extensive roof, if well thought out, should require little maintenance once everything is established. An intensive roof will need irrigation just as does the garden in the back or front of a house. If the soil system is thin, it may dry out more quickly, especially as it is unprotected from any wind or other elements.

Along with watering the green roof, the vegetation may need some fertilizer. There are various studies regarding fertilizing the growth. A lot depends on what types of plants are on the roof as to what fertilizer one uses. If you have installed succulents some nurseries suggest they be fertilized for three months after planting. There are other studies that refute this. It all depends on which studies you choose to believe. And it also depends on the climate the roof is expected to survive in.

If you had the roof installed by a contractor that contractor may have included some maintenance as part of their contract for the first year. Nevertheless the roof garden does require then same upkeep as a ground garden. You should rake up dead leaves, weed when necessary, and insure there are no invasive pests growing along with the roof plants. Just because it is on top of the house it still is a growing garden. Sometimes the manufacturer of a roof system may provide a maintenance checklist for you to follow so that your green roof doesn't have problems or cause problems such as leaking. If the roots are over zealous they may also invade the one of the protective layers on the roof structure. If so you want to know as soon as possible. Regular roof maintenance is also required.
