March to the Sea by David Weber and John Ringo, continues the Prince Roger series. Prince Roger and his bodyguards are stranded on the steamy jungle planet of Marduk. Roger and his companions are trying to get back to Earth and restore Roger to his place in the Imperial Palace of Man. Their goal is the star port on the other side of the planet from where they were forced to land their shuttles. Between them and the star port is a planet filled with deadly carnivores and even deadlier four-armed 3 meter tall natives.

Prince Roger was thought by many to be a useless fop of a prince, good for nothing useful. In the first novel, March Upcountry, he grew into a man that his bodyguards could trust with their lives. In this installment, Roger continues his growth a prince. In March to the Sea, the challenges are more political and diplomacy related rather than combat related like the previous book. The battles are on a bigger scale than March Upcountry, with larger armies of Mardukians.

To make his bodyguards' lives harder, Roger has begun to blossom as a warrior, especially at close combat. Along with his new confidence in his combat prowess, Roger's killer instincts come to the front. He quite often runs ahead into the thick of battle waving his pistol and sword. His bodyguards are left trying to catch up and protect him which is difficult in the heat of battle.

The leader of the imperial marines is Captain Pahner, a grizzled veteran of 50 years in the Imperial Marines. He is a mentor figure for Roger and is molding Roger into the prince he is meant to be. Pahner has a strong grasp of ancient military tactics which stands him well in the battles on Marduk. His marines are forced to learn how to use weapons such as swords and spears instead of their more advanced bead weapons.

This second installment of the Prince Roger series is a great addition to what is turning out to be a solid science fiction series. The story is nothing new but the way it is presented is engaging and entertaining. It's Geektime gives March to the Sea an 8 on the d10 of sequels.
