In these troubled times, crime rates have increased dramatically. This article addresses home invasions specifically. In a report from the United States Department of Justice:

38 percent of assaults and 60 percent of rapes occur during home invasions
One in five homes undergoes a home invasion or break-in
There are more than 8,000 home invasions every day in North America
50 percent of home invasions involve the use of a weapon; the most common weapons used are knives or other cutting instruments
In 48 percent of home invasions, victims sustain physical injuries
Victims age 60 or older make up 17 percent of home invasion victims
In 68 percent of home invasions, victims and the accused are strangers; in 11 percent of these cases, victims and the accused are friends, business associates, or family

According to this information it is not necessarily unreasonable to prepare to defend yourself against an uninvited guest in your home. This same article goes on to give great advice on how to protect yourself from an invasion occurring, but if someone does get into your home, what then? Of course, you will call the authorities if possible, but wouldn't it be nice to know that you can defend yourself, and do it without causing the death of the intruder? Also, maybe you don't like the idea of having a lethal weapon in the house because you have small children.

Paintball guns can look like the real thing in many cases, especially those that are magazine fed rather than hopper fed. Just presenting such a weapon could potentially be enough to change an intruder's mind and have him/her leave immediately. There is ammunition available for paintball guns that is rubber, which is quite painful without the benefit of body armor and/or face protection. There is also ammo available that is filled with what amounts to pepper powder. It is typically referred to as less lethal live rounds, and can be very effective in stopping an intruder in their tracks. It is illegal in some states for private use, but it is used in law enforcement and military operations quite frequently when non-lethal force is the correct answer for any given situation.

We carry a specific self defense weapon, the T68 Self Defense Launcher. This gun will allow the owner to shoot 10 rounds semi-automatically at an intruder from one magazine up to 60 feet away. These rounds can be the "live" rounds described above, which are filled with a pepper powder, or can be training rounds which are filled with a harmless white powder. Either round may be able to provide enough of a distraction to the intruder for the homeowner to get out of the house, or for help to arrive. The rounds are fired at a higher pressure than other paintball guns, and they break open on impact, dispersing their powder. If it was the live round, the pepper powder will be fairly effective in incapacitating the intruder. The training rounds will be less effective, but having been projected at high speed will be an attention getter and provide a certain amount of fear.

There are many paintball guns, 68 and 43 calibers, that can use the rubber ammunition also described above. As mentioned, anyone struck with a rubber projectile is going to feel its impact, and will be slowed down, to assist in escape or to allow for the cavalry to arrive. With rubber rounds, you can also purchase a target system and practice your aim, in case you may need to protect yourself. The rubber balls are reusable - just pick them up and clean them off.

We would like to remind everyone that the use of paintball guns by children is still dangerous. Eyes can be permanently injured by paintball projectiles. The discussions here are related to less lethal uses of paintball guns and ammunition intended to intimidate and slow an intruder during threats to personal safety, but there have been cases where fatalities have occurred. Also, because these weapons look very much like a lethal weapon, we also caution anyone carrying one to do so with discretion. A police officer may not be able to tell it is a paintball gun if the gun is observed lying in the open on the passenger seat during a routine traffic stop, and will react as though it is a lethal weapon. Everyone is encouraged to be extremely careful while using paintball equipment in any scenario, whether it is for fun, for training or for self defense.
