When your body is stressed it responds in a certain way. It does not matter whether the cause of the stress is physical, eg. pain, lack of sleep, infection... or if it is emotional stress. Stress and strain can affect both your body and will, and increase your blood sugar levels as a result of the way different hormones respond to your stress levels.
In one study it was found adults with diabetes performing a 20 minute stress test, had raised blood sugar levels which continued to be raised by about 35 mg/dL (1.94 mmol/L) for another 5 hours. Their blood pressure was also increased. As well, it was shown through increased levels of the hormones adrenaline, cortisol and the growth hormone, their insulin resistance was also raised.
Everyday stress factors can also cause you to have a higher HbA1c level... especially if you handle stress in an ineffective way. Anger, impatience and anxiety are examples of ineffective coping mechanisms.
As stress is a motivating force in your life, you wouldn't want to eliminate it all. But to reduce the stress levels in your life you need to either change the circumstances you are in or change your view of them.
So what are the best ways to reduce stress? Here are some tips on keeping your stress levels low:
1. Take time out to relax: spend time listening to your favorite music, reading a good book, meditation or yoga. Yoga is famous for relieving stress, promoting health and even making muscles more flexible.
2. Exercise: Why not look at exercise as time out for yourself when you can take a break from the hassles of the day? Your brain releases endorphins during exercise and these have both a calming and elevating effect on your mood. You will feel invigorated by the time you finish.
3. Talk to a friend: Don't keep your problems and fears to yourself... sharing them with a friend that listens to your concerns can really help to lessen any problem. Other options include talking with a counselor or psychologist.
4. Acceptance: Accept the things you cannot change... there are some happenings over which you have no control, trying to change these is a waste of energy. And where people are concerned, the only person you can change is yourself.
5. Laughter: Laugh at every opportunity. Its impossible to laugh and be stressed at the same time. In fact, there are over 6000 laughter clubs around the world where people get together just to have a laugh. Why not join one today?
6. Sleep: A really basic way to feel less stress during the day is to get enough sleep at night. As well as waking up refreshed, you could wake up with better blood sugar control. Recent research shows that not getting enough sleep may contribute to insulin resistance. There is also evidence that sleep by itself helps your body to use sugar more effectively.
Mastering your stress levels has several beneficial side effects. Specifically, it helps to ward off emotional problems that are linked with poor blood sugar control, especially depression and anger.
